It’s that time of the year again, and the Holidays will be here before we know it. Projects are wrapping up, and Vacations are being scheduled. It’s tempting to take your foot off of the gas as well, and enjoy some football or family time. It can be hard to “keep grinding” when the Colts are playing this well, and Peyton is in town, but now is the time to set yourself apart.
I strongly encourage everyone, regardless of profession, to take a moment and reflect back on the year. What went well? What didn’t turn out as expected? What are your goals for next year?
Make a list, and act on it! Use this time to brush up on the latest-and-greatest technology. Get that PMP, CISSP, or MCP certification that you’ve been putting off since March. Do something to improve yourself!
In today’s highly competitive job market, self-improvement and self-study are becoming must-haves. That’s great that you meet all of the requirements for the new position or internal promotion that you just applied for, but so do 35 other applicants. Employers are looking for something that sets you apart from the crowd. They want self-motivated and driven individuals, who are passionate about what they do. I’m not saying that certifications are the only way to demonstrate your passion, but it’s a great place to start.
Get out there are do something to improve yourself, and get a head-start on the rest of your peers, who are deep in a tryptophan slumber or glued to the TV.
Make that next step in your career and set yourself up for a great 2014!
